ANT's

We all have ANT's!

Who knew these Automatic Negative Thoughts are not only running around in our heads, they are so common that mental health peeps around the world have named them all - like biologists have named whale species!

We're gonna talk about 10 different kinds of ANT's and hell ya, I’m gonna give you the magic wand waving spells you can use to banish them. (no toxic poison needed)

Here's the ideal world flow chart:

  • ANT (Automatic Negative Thought)
  • NAT (Neutral Acceptable Thought)
  • BAT (Balanced Alternative Thought
  • KAT (Krazy Amazeballs Thought)

When you are trying to move your thoughts from one stage to the next, keep in mind that there’s a thing in the counselling world where we can look at thoughts we have as definitely not me, definitely me, or maybe me. (Like a new pair of hiking boots, you might want to wear them for a while and break them in before you take them on a full blown hike).

Being slightly uncomfortable with the new thought but trying it out anyway is fine. You don’t have to force it be a definitely me thing. You can try it out as a 'maybe me' thing first

All or Nothing Thinking

Things are right or wrong, good or bad, black or white. There is no grey area.

Overgeneralizing

This ANT knows it all and comes to general conclusions based on a single event or one piece of evidence.

Magnification and Minimization

Believes achievements are unimportant, and/or mistakes are excessively important.

Jumping to Conclusions

Mind reading and fortune telling are the hallmark moves of this ANT

Emotional Reasoning

Assumes that emotions reflect the way things really are; mistakes feelings for facts.

Disqualifying the Positive

Concentrates on the negatives while filtering out the positives.

magical thinking

Believes that actions will influence unrelated situations.

Labelling and Shoulds

These are the blame and shame twins who give you all the 'shoulds'.

Dealing with your ANT's
